I am John Roberts, the principal dentist and dental coach at Cote Royd Dental Practice.
I’ve been a dental practitioner since December 1981, set up my first practice in Rochdale in 1987 and have been based in Huddersfield since 2003.
I believe patients education and patient choice is paramount to building a partnership and trust between the patient and all of the team at Cote Royd Dental Practice.
The whole team looks to work with you to deliver a dental care journey you will appreciate and enjoy.
I understand the connection between someone’s dental health their previous dental care and how this could affect a person’s health.
I’ve been attending and teaching alternative medicine and dentistry courses in the UK, Europe and the USA and have incorporated my knowledge into my dental work though out the 25 years of my career.
The team are committed to improving and helping maintain a patient’s general dental health. Advice is given, from helping parents of new born babies on breast feeding and its influence in the growth of the jaws, to helping older people who want to avoid dentures or have a toxin free mouth.
There are treatments, protocols and materials we do not use at Cote Royd Dental Practice. This is because of our concerns about the safety to myself, our staff, our patients and also the environment. We offer dental alternatives to all of these or can refer patients if they chose treatments we do not provide.
The emphasis of the practice was on preventive and holistic dental care treating the patient’s wellbeing as well as their teeth.John Roberts BChD

Ellen Newton (BDS)
General Dental Council Number: 103389
Ellen qualified at Sheffield university in 2006 and has worked in general dentistry since then developing her skills and understanding in many areas of general dentistry including aesthetic dentistry, smile design, gum disease, orthodontics, jaw joint problems, sleep apnoea, and full mouth rehabilitation.
She joined the practice in September 2017 and since then has embarked on a journey with the guidance of John Roberts towards providing a “whole-body” approach to dentistry.
Her methodology includes consideration of:
- diet and nutrition
- microbiome management
- the immune system status and underlying health issues
- the biocompatibility of dental materials, implants and root treated teeth
- the function of the jaw joints, bite and facial muscles, their development and relationship with the neck, face and therefore the rest of the body
- the patency of the airway and its effect on sleep and overall health
- new techniques for optimising healing and regeneration
Ellen works closely with Functional Medicine doctors and will refer patients if she sees something in the mouth that could indicate an underlying problem. “The effect of body chemistry and mechanical and biological function is of paramount importance in overall health and we must respect this in dentistry also. Making things look as beautiful as they are healthy is what I aspire to!”
She practices biological dentistry, is SMART certified for the safe removal of amalgam fillings, and also uses the PRGF treatments for after extractions for improved healing and regeneration. Ellen provides simple aesthetic orthodontics at present but is looking to start providing functional orthodontics in the future for optimising good jaw relationship development, airway health and beautiful smiles.
Outside of dentistry she is a keen climber and enjoys mountain biking and walking with her husband in the Peak District where she lives with her 2 children.

As Barry’s thirst for learning increased he began to develop a special interest in Implantology: In 1999 he attended a Straumann Implantology course and in 2000 began a year long implant course at the Tatum Institute. He became a member of The International Congress of Oral Implanologists and has furthered his studies in this subject with Q-Implant course (2004), Innova Implant course (2005), Soft Tissue Management in Implant Dentistry (2004), and The Harpole Center course on blades, ramus blades and ramus frames (2004).
Over the years he began to run his own hands-on Implant courses which were attended by both UK and international dentists.
Barry has always been fervent about increasing his knowledge of the latest techniques in order to make sure his patients are offered and receive the very best treatment for ALL their dental needs and in 2005 he attended the Ceramic Systems course and subsequently purchased their ‘Cerec’ Machine which enables us to produce porcelain nosubhealth.com fillings, crowns and veneers in one visit. So no impressions, no temporary crowns or dressings and no second injection or appointment.
Barry is a keen cyclist, both on road and mountain and extends this interest by participating in many triathlons, including the fabled Iron Man triathalon.
Barry is married with two grown up children. Over the past few years he has given financial support to two charitable projects in Africa, one of them enabling a village school to be rebuilt and maintained.
